IN BED WITH A CELEB
Every so often we take a ride through the mind of a creative genius, I have either worked with or just really admire. Here they get to air everything from their opinions to their dirty laundry. This fortnight I’m having:
A laid-back one -on-one with Simbad

1. Simbad, how are you? How is life sowing your DJ/Producing skills around the world?
Well you know how much of a blessing it is to do what you love everyday of your life, so I can’t complain really.
2. When I first met you, you had just unleashed ‘Soul Fever’ on to the unsuspecting House Music connoisseurs. What other gems can we expect from you in the coming months?
Waaaaaow so much stuff has happened since then lol! You can expect a new compilation I did with my friend Dj Lefto called ‘Worldwide Family Vol.1’ for Brownswood Rec. It’s due out on the 6th December 2010, on double cd with previously unreleased fresh up-tempo & down-tempo electronic music. There are loads of Simbad remixes for different artists hitting the streets on a regular basis (recently for Mc Ty, Agape, Erykah Badu, Zed Bias & Omar, RBA KPO , the list goes on…). The new Donn T album ‘Kaleidoscopic’ (she’s a singer from Philadelphia & the lil’ sister of Questlove from The Roots) that I produced just came out last month. I have new singles for Defected and a bunch of collaborations with Cooly G, Rozzi Dame & a few other talented peeps… I’m always working on new stuff. You know how it is, right??
3. Being a man of the world and crossing paths with so many different people must help you with understanding cultures. In your opinion which nation would you say takes hold of their dreams and lives the life they love rather than the life they loath the most?
Quite a tough question in the sense that I don’t think any nation takes hold of their dreams…
It’s all an illusion!! The economic system we live in is based around consumerism & mental raping (pardon my French!!) and it seems that people keep their third eye closed or don’t elevate to different stages of consciousness that much…I believe more in genuine people then in ‘nations’ really. You have to embrace what is around you; read in between the lines of what is offered information wise and stay super open, that’s my humble opinion.
4. Give us a brief rundown of the year in the life of Simbad.
A third of the year is spent mainly in the USA touring cities & recording artists, most of my days & nite are spent in airplanes / airports / trains / hotels / clubs or festivals around the planet; and the rest of the time spent in my studio in London… Trying to fit some cooking in & obviously trying to dedicate a mini-mini-minimum time to the lovely ladies I meet.
5. If there was anything in the world you would swap DJing/Producing for what would it be?
Probably would swap with a Shaolin Monk or a Kung Fu master.

6. Is being a DJ all about free entry, drinks tokens and after parties with beautiful people or is there much more to it?
I guess there’s a bit more to it if you consider the fact that we can present new music or unheard talent to audiences (especially radio wise). We can change the mood of an entire place just by playing the right (or wrong lol) tune! And, yeah perhaps at times we might go crazy ‘down to the constant travelling between continents and sleep deprivation’…. But hey, it’s all good!!
7. Like Martin Luther King Jr, many of us have a dream, but please advise us on how to make them come true, just like you did.
Through my own eyes I have learnt to never give up. If you want to live the life that you want to live (I did so many shitty jobs to survive in the past!!!). You can always turn things towards you instead of against you… It’s a question of choices, sacrifices & love.
Remaining positive and not being afraid of random experiences that the universe has to offer have been some of the keys for me, but hey, I’m still learning everyday as I live day by day!!!
8. Tell me 2 things everyone should do before 11am
Drink a big glass of water and make love to the one you love (if possible!)
9. Don’t tell anyone but I’ll be in New York throughout the festive season, will I be able to find you over there at a warehouse party?
Hey!! Yes! I’ll be in NY next month (Deep Space @ Cielo on the 18th October and a warehouse party on the 22nd October!)
Check out also the legendary I Love ViNYl parties twice a month too, absolutely fantastic vibes and great music!
